Sew Francie

Sew Francie is a blog where I an share my journey to become a better seamstress, to learn new techniques and share my projects both simple and complex in hopes of inspiring others by renewing their interest in sewing or sparking some interest in those who have never picked up a needle and thread in their lives. If I can do it, so can you. Also, my fabric stash is a bit out of control.

Who I am

I'm a creative spirit at heart. I love clothes, colors, food, gardens, reading, writing and anything else that embraces my wonder and need to create.

Home is a farmhouse in rural Indiana with a husband, three stepdaughters, a wiener dog, a cat, a goat and some chickens. When I'm not there, I'm either with family or at my regular 9-5.

I am named after both of my grandmothers and find that I am more like them every day. They were creative, happy, family oriented women and I am proud to carry on that tradition.

I learned to sew from my mother. I remember endless days of her altering clothing to fit my tall yet very thin frame as a child. I had hand made coats, dresses, hats, you name it, mom made it. Even now, when something I'm sewing doesn't make sense, my first phone call is to my mother. My first attempt at real sewing was in middle school when she helped me make a pair of pants. I thought it was boring. I wrote it off until I was in college where I found a passion for fashion and renaissance fair costumes. From that point on, my collection of sewing machines and fabric has accumulated to a rather frightening level. 

Where I get my fabric

I'm not above anything. I'll take free fabric from anyone. Thrift stores sometimes have yards upon yards of fabric for dirt cheap. Garage sales are great too. The clearance bin at any store from specialty fabric stores to Walmart are also great places to look. I rarely pay full price for fabric. I have not yet tried to order fabric online but I will probably pursue it in the near future.
